A multidisciplinary approach to evaluate ecosystems resilience under climate change

Objectives

Objective 1

Improve observations to understand processes

The approach that will be utilized is based on machine learning and pattern recognition. It will include the design and tuning of a set of algorithms for the pre-processing, filtering, segmenting and recognition of vegetation patterns derived from satellite images and other currently available data.

Objective 2

a. Develop advanced models capable of capturing the ecological resilience

b.Increase our understanding of the ways in which the climate and the biological systems interact with each other.

The goals are to develop improved mathematical models driven by data and to determine the most suitable numerical scheme for their solution.

Objective 3

Define the strategies and determine the possible actions for mitigating the effect of climate change on the global climate

To simulate the effect of climate change on vegetation patterns, we plan to apply the scenarios presented in the Assessment Reports published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) by combining the methods of applied mathematics with the corresponding ecological interpretations.

Objective 4

Draw the attention of Italian scientific community towards the challenges posed by climate changes

One of the most specific objectives of the project will be to draw the attention of the Italian scientific community in the various applications of mathematics in the natural sciences (PE1 21 ERC subfields).
